Here is the first page of the collection of Armenian inscribed rugs from yester years.... These rugs were woven none commercially, they were all made for personal household use or as it was a tradition for dowry pieces therefore each rug is as unique heirloom as their weavers...  

These hand woven treasures mark an important period of historical time when the Armenian culture was uninfluenced by the later ruling soviet regime...

Number: 1

Size:  3'0" x 5'2"

Origin: Karabagh, Shushi

Period: dated "1917"

Inscription:  "1917" next to the date the initials in Armenian Alphabet: "T M I"

Status: Sold

Description: A commemorative dated and initialed rug with a Peacock as a center medallion surrounded with four doves in a mirror image format,  symbolizing beauty, prosperity and harmony...   Triple border--each one with an original, classic Caucasian design. Artistically drawn and masterfully woven. 

Condition:  Perfect, all original, full pile, no known repairs, stains or damage. High quality all Caucasian lustrous handspun wool and vegetal dyes. Freshly washed and ready .


Number: 2

Size:  3'6" x 6'8"

Origin: Karabagh, Shushi

Age: Circa 1915

Inscription:  " A r m i g" (A female name--feminine of Armen, short for Armenouhi

Status: Available

Description: Most likely a dowry rug, woven by the bride to be, signed by her. A very unusual, charming rug with repeated designs of parrots on branches on a Madder red field. Stylized grape vine design border. Artistically drawn and masterfully woven. 

Condition:  Perfect, all original, full pile, no known repairs, stains or damage. High quality all Caucasian lustrous handspun wool and vegetal dyes. Freshly washed and ready .


Number: 3

Size:  3'7" x 5'11"'

Origin: Karabagh, Shushi

Age: dated "[19]36"

Inscription:  "36 T". The letter "T" placed right after a number is the first letter of the Armenian word of "Tiv" meaning "in the year of".

Status: Available

Description: Please compare this rug with the above--as if it was the very same weaver or her daughter..? It is woven in the same traditional manner, same type of border and design format only on this one the parrots are replaced with bouquets of roses... See how they compliment each other, I think these two belong to each other...

Condition:  Perfect, all original, full pile, no known repairs, stains or damage. High quality all Caucasian lustrous handspun wool and vegetal dyes. Freshly washed and ready .


Number: 4

Size:  4'10" x 8'6"

Origin: Karabagh, Kedashen

Age: circa 1920 

Inscription:  Dated "[19]19T " next to the date the initials in Armenian Alphabet: "A. M."

Status: Sold

Description: An elongated, mirror image of a Sevan/Shield Kazak design, Some call it a "church floor plan". A very powerful rug yet charming and naiv with strong character. Pleas look at the detail pictures for the filler elements. A classic lives and trellis design border. Very strong handle with ample pile for years to be used even in a high traffic area.

Condition: Perfect, all original, full pile, no known repairs, stains or damage. High quality all Caucasian lustrous handspun wool and vegetal dyes. Freshly washed and ready .

Origin: Karabagh

Age: dated "1940"

Size:  5"8 x 4'8"

Origin: Karabagh

Age: dated "1925"

Inscription:  Date"1925 T." next to the date name (most likely the signature of the weaver "Ashkhen Korkinian" (female name).

Status: Available

Description: A portrait rug with the classic subject matter of "Mother Armenia mourning over the ruins of one of the oldest Armenian city of Ani"  This is a commemorative rug meant to hang on the wall. A perfect example of a pure Armenian rug.

Condition: Perfect, all original, full pile, no known repairs, stains or damage. High quality all Caucasian lustrous handspun wool and vegetal dyes. Freshly washed and ready .
